LADIES HANDICAP SINGLES TOURNAMENT

A small but perfectly formed group of Ladies convened on 13th May to compete for the Val Probyn Long Trophy. We had a great time: lots of laughter, plenty of good close handicap tennis, many pertinent comments from the dedans and a winner who squeaked through by one game.

Jeannie Pigott, Jan Fuller and Jackie Healey all played well with cunning shots and well disguised lobs but in the end it was Angela Probyn and Susie Wessely who each won three games. However Angela lost to Susie in the first match of the day. So everything hung on the last match. If Susie won she would be the outright winner. She fought back after Jeannie took a 3-0 lead to get the score to 3-3 but Jeannie brought all her experience to bear to win the final game. So three wins each and on the count back of games won and lost Angela won out.

You couldn’t have arranged for a better finale. Thank you to Kevin for his as ever excellent marking and match management and to PJ for providing us with a lovely light lunch and wine.

A message from PJ: do put next year’s date in your calendar when the fixtures list comes out - your handicap doesn’t matter. This year the handicap range was 66 and above.
